'It was a tough decision for us - the rain soaked pitches of Gloucester or the sun drenched beaches of Jersey, uhmmmm! Well after a good 2 minutes contemplation, flights were booked and the pot hunters were on their way. Having missed the indoor tournament after 5 years on the bounce it was good to show some Riga support for the beach events. The standard was pretty mixed with really only 4 teams in contention for the final. Hit Shot Riga (Lisa, Liz, John Tom and Tom Jr.) and Mavericks Misfits (Kel, Rach and 2 local guys) were in different pools. The Misfits had some tight games against a couple of Jersey teams but managed to secure their place in the final against Riga, who up till that point had not been really tested.

The final was a grand affair. The crowds were gathered in force, the court was pristinely raked, the sun shone down and even the local TV and radio were there. Both teams rose to the occasion and the crowds enjoyed some exciting, hard fought rallies. However the hitting power of Johnny G and Tom proved too much to handle and Riga closed the match in 2 straight sets.

The Jersey guys were clearly delighted we made the effort to come over and are keen to attract more mainland teams next year to help raise the standard. We will definitely be going back as a fantastic weekend was had by all both on and off the court. (And guess what - it did rain at Gloucester again!!!)
