Comments Congratulation to Dr. Chris Anderson, the first Riga player to be selected for England! Whilst leading a very busy life, he also managed to obtain a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (biological sciences) which will be awarded to him in Nottingham University on 15th of December, 2005.

Well done!

Comments Hello,
My name is Uldis Zarins and I am writing on behalf of the Official Riga City Guide on the Internet www.virtualriga.com. I would like to inquire about possibility to add a link to our site under the non-volleyball section of Resources page on your site. We are the only Internet resource who bears the name of Official Guide, according to an agreement with Riga City Council. And, by the way, we were really excited to find out about your club, so we decided to publish a story about it on our portal. Please take a look on it to check out whether it is fine with you.
Yours sincerely

Hi guys and gals!! Mrs Saunders here!!!!

Just to say a huge THANK YOU to the whole club for the extremely generous gifts and obvious hard work in the collection for our wedding - we were overwhelmed and had an absolutely amazing day. Canada was fantastic too - all over a bit too quickly!!

See you all soon, at Wolston or the odd tournament. And just because I'm a Mrs. I'm still not grown up, so don't expect that giggling to stop!!

Love and best wishes to one and all,

Ruth and Mark xxxx

Subject Anyone seen Justine & Paul?
Comments Hi there Some may not remember me... having moved to Devon in 2000, but I played for Riga ladies for a few years between 1995 and 2000.

A little bird told me that Justine & Paul Sutton have since moved to Devon and I can't find them (maybe they don't want to be found!). Our ladies team would love to have Justine on their side.

Does anyone have any contact numbers/emails/etc ???

Much appreciated. Amanda Squires

Comments Due to my impending departure from Scotland, I will also be passing into Dave's care some photographic evidence of Riga in (much) earlier times, so all you Riga old-boys out there, if you want a chance to vet what gets shown please send your American Express card numbers through to the above address. I know I'll see some of you in Belgium but will probably catch up with the rest of you since I intend to make my return to Riga as the Vet's youth policy sometime about October.

Well anyway even though NZ is awesome I'm heading home now all the touring has been done and people want me to work for a living! So I suppose I ought to get fit for next season .. that is assuming the snowboarding, sailing, trekking etc, etc. haven't kept me fit and yep I've played volleyball too. Couldn't miss out on that! See you all soon'ish'.

Subject Where are they now?
Comments Just been looking at your website. Although not a member as such I was married to a player, John Clarke, who now lives in Eire. I have his e-mail address but will contact him telling him about the Riga website. I introduced him to volleyball (being a Latvian, I had to!) and he joined in the early 70s and played till leaving for Irish shores in 1981. He coached the national team for a while and even travelled to Atlanta on some volleyball business! I certainly know a few of the present players, in fact I'm amazed they are still running around! Hi Chris, Martin, Andy and of course my 'old' friend Valdis.

Please feel free to e-mail me!

Good luck for the rest of the season

Comments You'll remember me, went up like a salmon at the net at club night last Thursday but came down like a box of fish fingers in a crumpled heap ! Many thanks for your first aid and assistance, the upshot is that I've torn the ligaments in the ankle and will be in plaster for several weeks, no wonder I felt ill !! Once again thanks to those who rendered first aid, hope to see you again but not for some time by the look of it.

Best Wishes,

Subject Hello!
Comments Have found the Web site fascinating, bringing back all sorts of memories. For anyone that can remember, I played for Riga in 1989-1995, I think. I also coached during this time.

Things have not changed much I'm afraid. I still work at Henley College Coventry. I have just come out of retirement and am playing/coaching for Leicester V.C.. Still enjoying the game, although I am now heavily involved in competitive swimming.

Look forward to hearing from anyone who remembers!

Subject Riga History!!!!!!
Comments First congratulations on a very good web site, but my real reason for this email is your "inaccurate" version of the Club's history, in particular the selection of the Club name RIGA!! In fact the name was chosen by MYSELF and Eric Murnieks! Not as your article says 'in honour of the Old Latvians' but because we felt the club needed a more modern image and a name that people could a) pronounce and b) one that would relate to Latvia and also fit into the new image we were trying to build for the club. Actually the original name before RIGA was Valka (meaning Falcons) which is the bird on the DVF Logo at Wolston, but we favoured RIGA and so it was adopted. It is also sad that neither myself nor Eric are mentioned at all in your account of the club's history as we were both key to the re-vitalisation and 're-birth' of the club at that time as I'm sure the Club Veterans will confirm. On that note - Why is there no mention of the RIGA Vets??!!!

I look forward to a response -

Best wishes

Paul Nightingale (RIGA founder, National League Captain/Coach and RIGA Vets player for MANY years)

Thanks for the note ... if anyone wishes to give me an updated version of the clubs history please do so and I'll add it to the site. Also, it would be good to have a section about the RIGA Vets. Maybe an extension of the "Where are they now?" page which currently is rather sparse. Please send in any info about this.

Subject Poole festival of volleyball
Comments Anyone interested in entering this tournament?? Its on the bank holiday weekend - 26-28th August, at Hamworthy Recreation Club. Camping at the ground (£10 per person for the whole weekend), live band and/or disco Fri & Sat night.

This is usually a really good tournament and places get filled very quickly.

Interested parties so far include myself, Emma, Rachel, Justine and Paul, Michelle, Marinella.

It would be great if we could put a couple of teams in. Either two mixed teams or a women's and a men's. Whatever really?

I appreciate that it is still a long way off and don't need a definite commitment, just an idea of who might be interested.

Please let me know, either via the web site or email me direct ASAP if you fancy it.

Subject News Update
Comments To all those who may have doubted it, another of the old farts has been dragged into the electronic age. (And you thought Chris was the only Luddite, Phil!) Here's my suggestion - how about a competition to design a new logo? We've had the "Digger" for a long time, even if Graham and Dave haven't got round to putting it on the Website yet. But should we have a new one? Let's throw it open to the public. As for a prize, I'm sure our erstwhile Treasurer and well-known skinflint can come up with something. Free entry to all home games for a season? So how's about it, surfers?

PS My beard and I are like bosom buddies - and when have you known any man voluntarily give up some bosoms!

A new logo would be great ... it could replace the rotating volleyball that Graham knocked up one day!

Subject Web page suggestions
Comments How about a bulletin board. Basically a part of the web site in which peoples comments , messages can be posted. They would send their e-mails via the Warwick Riga address and then you can post them on a page. Things like peoples comments about the club e.g. subs, support at home games - that type of thing. Also people could ask for match officials e.g. Linesman wanted for a women's match etc. Or if any one had any volleyball shoes they wished to sell. Also if players were needed for tournament team they could ask on the bulletin board.
Done. You're looking at it!

Subject Hi
Comments Fancy that, Riga entering the electronic age - no doubt Chris Nason is still saying it will never happen! How about an e-mailing list for match reports, an internal Riga tournament of teams throughout the ages at Musmaja, an address list of past and present members, or some compromising photographs of John Boughton, of which I have a few (remember the showers in Westwood John John?)

Best wishes to all who remember me, but especially Zano, Tom, John John, Chris and Mart Fart, if their bodies haven't given out yet!

Match reports will be added to these pages whenever they are published in the press. Emailing list .... maybe ... for the meanwhile use this bulletin board for announcements and keep coming back to check for new additions. As for a tournament at Musmaja ... this does happen each year during the summer. Keep an eye on these pages for details of this summers tournament.
