| WHILE reading your editorial "Hang on to a winning team,
referring to the Fiat basketball side, I felt compelled to write concerning
Coventry City Council's track record regarding their treatment of our club. RIGA Coventry are an amateur volleyball side and are among the 8 top eight teams, playing in Division I of the National League. The second team are well placed in the Birmingham and District League and top of the Coventry League, and we have a highly successful women's team. Not only do we play all over the country but because of our reputation we receive many invitations to appear in continental tournaments. Not only do Coventry council make it impossible to train, by making excuses that the Sports Centre must be allocated more to public recreation (usually badminton,). but suitable schools are hard to come by, with the exception of Bablake's. Not only is it difficult to get time at the Sports Centre, but the cost is prohibitive. bearing in mind that all expenses have to be met by the players. RIGA Coventry receive local and national Press coverage, and continental Press and television coverage yet we cannot obtain sponsorship from any of the city's major industrial companies. Because of the total lack of interest from Coventry, we shall be playing next season under the banner of Nuneaton Recreation. P. J. Parker, team manager. |
