| Two resounding 3-0 victories on Sunday have set Riga's ladies
team on course for second place in National League Division Three.
Victories over Tees Valley and Leicester Sound were an emphatic statement of intent to the other clubs chasing promotion. Despite their hosts being well below Riga in the table, end-of-season games against lowly opposition have often proven the undoing of many a promotion-chasing team. The Riga women, however, although travelling with an injury-reduced squad, showed few signs of nerves as they breezed through their first match, largely thanks to powerful attacking from captain Lynette Purkis and Sharon Allen. With Tees disposed of, Riga's attention then focused on local rivals Leicester Sound. They too were given short shrift, Allen once again starring. With immediate rivals Manchester suffering defeat at the hands of Cambridge, the mood in the Riga camp is optimistic. "We've been close to promotion a couple of times before in recent years," said coach Martin Warman. "But these two results take us even closer. Our final games of the season are in a month against Sheffield and the other Leicester side. If we play like this we'll be celebrating more than just another couple of victories." |
