| DESPITE the encouragement of their largest crowd of the
season, Riga conceded their unbeaten National League record when they slumped
to a 3-0 defeat against Division One newcomers Leeds. Although they made the early running in the first set, Phil Leach and John Gilling blocking splendidly, Riga suffered a major setback when Gary Oakley tweaked a hamstring as he pulled off a spectacular retrieval. Former England international Mike Percival slotted into his berth but slick-serving substitute Mike Stewart saw Leeds to a 15-9 decision. ...determined defensive display spearheaded by skipper Tom Young. De Hoogh and lan Bowes quickly imposed their attacking flair on the third set, and although Mike Percival's astute service earned seven points in a row to wrest the advantage, Leeds saved six set points before clinching a 17-15 triumph. Skipper Young - who collected a yellow card for a handling decision during that thrilling finale admitted: "We didn't play as well as we could have, but that's not to take anything away from.
