Riga look to turn the corner

Coventry Evening Telegraph, 31st October 1995

RIGA travel to Tooting on Saturday hoping to put their National League Division One campaign back on course against Aquila.

Two successive defeats have seen Warwick-based Riga slip into a mid-table slot following a bright start and they are determined to get it right.

Said captain Tom Young: "We've been involved in some great games this season. The Polonia match could have gone either way at the end. But we have got to, develop a killer instinct."

Tooting Aquila are very much a Jekyll and Hyde team, but Riga beat them last season and can look forward to ,a favourable result.

"We want to get back that winning feeling," said Young. "A victory over Aquila can keep us clear of relegation"

RIGA Ladies maintained their winning National League form with a solid 3-1 home success against Leicester - but their exertions told as they were outgunned 3-0 by Cleobury.

The power serving of Justine Sutton and Sally Hodge whisked them to a 15-12 verdict in the first set and they recovered from a shaky start to take the second 15-7.

Leicester kept the game alive by landing the third 17-15 but that spurred Riga to fresh endeavours and some steady setting from Jocelyn Glossop guided them through 15-7 in the fourth.

That effort seemed to tell, however, as Cleobury claimed three closely-contested sets to clinch the points.
