| WARWICK Riga aim to complete a National Volleyball League
Division One double over Bristol-based Sportset Whitefield at St Nicholas Park
Leisure Centre, Warwick on Saturday (6pm). Warwick came unstuck in their last match when they went down 3-0 to second placed Newcastle which was their first defeat of the year. Riga started brightly before fading badly as they missed man of the season, Phil Leach through a broken ankle. "With Leachie not around and Mike Percival struggling on his return from injury things were against us," said captain Tom Young. "Having said that we decided to try a couple of things and take the game to them. It worked at the beginning, but then we lacked the consistency to see it through." Consistency will certainly be what is required to enable Riga to achieve their target of a mid-table place. it was somewhat of a shock result, given the form of the two sides at the time, when Warwick beat Whitefield 3-2 at the start of this year. That began a mini revival for Riga and a mini decline for their visitors but both sides need a win on Saturday to boost their suspect confidence as the season moves to its conclusion. "We're under no illusions that Whitefield will be out for revenge," said Young. With our injury situation we're up against it but to win a match like this will do us no end of good." Meanwhile Warwick Riga's West Midland League side suffered their first defeat since the start of the season when they went down 3-1 to local rivals Birmingham in midweek. In a lack-lustre performance they failed to show any of the power. and control that has been a feature of their other recent performances. Coach Chris Nason said, "We were second best throughout, so second best is what we deserved." |
