Confidence boost as Riga limber up

Nuneaton Evening Tribune, 4th September 1980

Nuneaton's Riga volleyball side have won a tournament in Germany as they limber up for the start of the national league fixtures next month.
They were competing in the Bruhl tournament near Cologne and successfully defended the cup that they won last year.
Playing against ten local sides Riga took the honours although they made life difficult for themselves on occasions.
They are set to return again next year when. if they win the  tournament for a third time  the cup will be theirs to keep.
Victory in the tournament has boosted the confidence in the squad after an indifferent summer season.
Riga have reached the final stages of a number of competitions at home and abroad without actually taking the honours.
So success in Bruhl has encouraged them as they prepare for their campaign to win promotion out of national division two into the top flight.
They failed narrowly last season but are out to make amends this year.
Coach Tom Ojasoo said: "If we don't go up this year we all want shooting."

Consistent
"We are ranked about seventh in the country above some of the division one sides but it's a matter of being consistent".
"We must produce the goods week after week if we want to join the top flight," he added.
The league season starts on October 11 when Riga travel to Portsmouth followed by a match against Bedminster (Bristol) on October 12.
