| IN front of the biggest crowd of the season, Riga conceded
their unbeaten
National League Division One record. They were only in control against the newly promoted visitors early in the opening set when Phil Leach and John Gilling blocked out the Leeds attack. A tweaked hamstring for Gary Oakley disrupted the Riga rhythm, and although he was replaced by ex-England player Mike Percival the set was lost 15-9. The second set lasted an epic 36 minutes. Riga's dogged determination kept them in contention and three set points were saved before Leeds won 15-11. Leeds opened a 4-0 lead in the final set. Percival's astute and controlled serving rattled up seven straight points to give Riga the. advantage; Phil Wy1es followed his example and the hosts were looking at set point. 1.ceds, however, showed their character, the fiercely contested finale saw Riga skipper Tom Young given the yellow card, and after saving set point at 15-all.Warwick eventually conceded 17-15. "A tremendous match to watch" said Young. "We didn't play as well as we can. but that's not taking anything away from Leeds." |
