Riga aim to sink Solent

Warwick Courier, 6th October 1995

WARWICK Riga open their National league Division One season against Solent at St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre, Warwick, tomorrow (Saturday).

The match starts at 6pm and Riga will be looking to make a flying start against the newly promoted south coast side.

The introduction of an American football-style conference league system has kept Riga in D v One, and promoted Solent from Div Two where they finished 3rd last year.

"We won three games last year and that should have been enough to keep us up" said Warwick captain Tom Young. "But the division was very competitive and any one of half a-dozen sides were in relegation danger. he new-system has given us a lifeline and we'll be all out to make sure we stay in Division One."

Two of the club's new players, centre Simeon Nex and off setter Phi Leach, figured, in the Anglo-Scottish tournament at Liverpool last weekend. A third Riga newcomer - former England player Mike Percival was unavailable.

Riga finished a creditable 5th, and learned valuable lessons.

"We played some good volleyball at times" added Young. "The new guys fitted in well and that bodes well for the new season."
