Cambridge, 2nd-3rd August 2003Riga had 2 teams representing the club at the Cambridge volleyball tournament last weekend - the men's and ladies second teams were there enjoying a glorious weekend of sun, alcohol ( more of that later ) and the odd game of good volleyball. First up for the ladies team were old rivals Chiltern - and we came second. We then won all our other matches and by 2.00 pm, we'd finished playing. So, faced with a night out in a B&B miles from anywhere in deepest Cambridgeshire or a night out in Rugby - we opted for the later and spent an excellent Saturday evening in Leonardo's - Rugby's best Italian restaurant and consumed vast amounts of vino and generally caused havoc in this quiet romantic restaurant. So, it was back to Cambridge on the Sunday morning - complete with sore heads and, once again, our first match was against Chiltern. It was a close call and Riga Ladies lost by one point. We then beat TH Lynx - who will be Div 2 opponents this season and ended with a cracking game against a very fit team of US lady Marines. Our blocking was the highlight of the game - coach Boughton please take note and every team member did a number of winning blocks during the match (yes, even Sarah's feet left the ground for 1 point). We couldn't quite match the Americans as heat exhaustion and hangovers were starting to take their toll - but a very good game to end on. The men's team had a mixed weekend - playing some great volleyball and then playing some not so good stuff. The guys went through into the top pool on the Sunday and then didn't fare so well on the Sunday - but had a good weekend enjoying the sun. So, a good couple of days - Cambridge Rugby club facilities are now excellent and the change of date certainly brought about a change in the weather from previous years - we basked in wonderful weather over both days and each team gave good support to the other.
