Riga back on track at Aquila

Prosport NVL Division One, 29th February 2004
Aquila Lynx 2 Warwick Riga 3 (22-25 25-16 21-25 27-25 9-15)

On Sunday the Warwick team started well against Aquila and initially the team seemed to pick up their game quickly. The first set was a relatively comfortable win 25-22.

In the second set Aquila took their chances and played more adventurous. A number of long rallies were won by the London team and some poor defending on Riga’s side gave the home team an early advantage (12-7). Riga failed to improve and the set was lost 16-25.

In the third set Riga took control once again and Aquila trailed by a few points throughout the whole set. The Londoners played an attractive game but Riga answered by a better defence and some good blocking. Riga established a 2-1 set advantage after a 25-21 win.

The fourth set saw spectacular rallies combined with basic mistakes on both sides of the net. Riga started badly and trailed 1-5 early in the set. The team came back very well to 11-12 but did not regain the lead until very late in the set at 22-20. This two points margin should have been decisive but a match point at 23-24 was not converted and Aquila took the set 25-27 in the end.

The fifth set was very close halfway through (8-7) when Riga decided to close the block and finish the match in style. Difficult serves from Phil Wyles and Kees de Hoogh combined with some strong blocks at the net gave the visitors the set and match quickly went to Riga (15-9).

Coach Tom Young was relieved with the win on Sunday following the enormously disappointing loss against Docklands. "Only last season we would have lost both matches in a similar situation but today the team won an important match to keep our options to claim second place overall in the league", he said afterwards. "Docklands played very well on Saturday and we just made too many individual mistakes, it’s hugely disappointing because there is very little between both teams at the moment & it really boils down to 1 or 2 key points every time we play each other & today when we really needed it to go our way, it didn’t & because of our inferior sets difference this was our league decider! I’m still very proud of the lads because we’ve made massive steps forward this year & still have lots to play for so there will be no moping around in training this week with another huge match this coming weekend"’

The next match will be against Sheffield in the semi-final of the KO cup. The men’s team will have one more home match this season, which will be played against London Polonia on 27th March at St. Nicholas Sports Centre in Warwick.
