Riga’s first team, men, were on the road for the second week running in the last 16 of the National Knockout Cup,this time making the trip up to 3rd Division opponents Ellesmere.Coach Tom Young was in a reasonably relaxed mood about the game after an excellent win the previous week at Aquila,London and with two very good training sessions under the belt during the week,Young decided to rest a few of his players for this match travelling with only 8 players for what should be a fairly straight forward game for the first Division outfit. |

Riga won the match 3 – 0 with set scores of 18,14 & 11,wrapping the whole thing up in less than hour which Young was very pleased about considering the line up used. The main players on the day were setter Phil Wyles who controlled the Riga plays exceptionally well but also used his jump serve to great effect causing the Ellesmere reception great problems throughout the game and Mark Fearn who was used out of position as a front line hitter but who performed extremely well. |

Riga now look forward to a quarter final match against there old Midlands rivals,Stoke in a months time at home in Warwick which should guarantee a good turn out to see this very fiercely contested game.In the meantime it’s back to league business next week against the top team in the country for the last 10 years,London Malory. Again,Riga will be travelling South although Young is hoping that his fast improving outfit can give a good account of themselves & push Malory all the way in what is the team’s biggest test of the season thus far !! |
