MH sees off MK in KO Cup!

KO Cup 13th November 2004
Warwick Riga 3 Milton Keynes 0  (16-25 16-25 25-18 25-16 15-6)

Warwick Riga faced division 2 title contenders Milton Keynes in round 2 of the knock out cup in front of a capacity St Nicholas Park Leisure centre crowd! Well okay Matt Howe's’ Parents were there!

Warwick were looking for a good performance in preparation for a tough schedule of NVL games to follow. With Warwick missing Mark Fearn, Tom Young stepped up to the libero role and with Ed Ekenham away Andy Carr moved to opposite.

With Milton Keynes appearing to be missing a few key players, the game was never in doubt and Warwick were able to move into a comfortable lead from the start. The Warwick passers were on form giving Wyles all hitting options, a luxury not often felt by Warwick this season. With the score 18-10 Warwick relaxed slightly and with some good play by Milton Keynes, Milton Keynes captured a few points prompting a time-out by Warwick. After a gentle little reminder about standards and discipline Warwick went back to work and finished of the set 25-16.

In the second set Matt Howe was brought on, much to the jubilation of the crowd, and hit the floor running with some impressive hitting. With the passing early on in the set not as precise as the first, Warwick were relying on the wing hitters more than they would like. However as the pass improved Phil was able to use the middle, allowing Dan Turnbull to make some serious dents in the floor. John Gilling also hit some! With Warwick playing well, they closed out the set 25-13.

Matt Howe: brought on - much to the jubilation of the crowd !
Kees De Hoogh moved into opposite in the 3rd set with Andy Carr being given a much needed rest. Warwick accelerated away with some impressive jump serving by Chris Anderson, even if I do say so myself!!! To Milton Keynes credit they began to pick up strong Riga attacks to the dismay of the Riga hitters, although good transitional play from Riga ensured the point. Andy Collins, replacing Phil Wyles halfway though the set, was setting well, the best of which was a one handed set to Gilling who promptly put the ball away.
A good performance by Warwick eases them into the third round where they will face City of Salford away on the 22nd of January, the winner of which will progress into the quarter finals.
