Men’s 1^st beat Staffs and celebrate in style, despite Amnesia

Dopo una breve pausa e un fine settimana libero Riga viaggiava alla volta di Staffs per il solito derby con i cugini.
Come al solito Riga si aspettava una partita intensa. Staffs e` sempre un campo difficile e molte squadre ci hanno lasciato i 3 punti.
La partita di nervi e` iniziata nel riscaldamento con schiacciate al limite del regolamento, piu` che un riscaldamento sembrava un tiro al bersaglio, dopo un paio di interventi da parte del secondo albitro la calma e` tornata in campo.
Tom cosi  schierava la squadra con Phil, setter, Damon, opposite, John and Dan, middle players, Chris and Kiwi hitters, with Luca libero.

Il primo set iniziava con Staffs subito avanti e buona ripresa di Riga portava entrabe le squadre ad essere uguali nel modo di affrontare la partita. Staffs piu` concreto nelle difese mentre Riga piu` precisa nel first pass ma debole in difesa e alla battuta. Ma come al solito i soliti 5 minuti di amnesia di Riga permettevano Staffs di  guadagnare quei 5 punti che alla fine risultavano decisivi, il primo set finiva 25-21.

Il secondo set iniziava con gli stessi uomini in campo ma con ordini ben precisi da Tom a tutta la panchina di riscaldarsi. Il set scorreva sulla falsa riga del primo e Riga non riusciva ad imporsi nel gioco. Di nuovo a meta` set i soliti 5 minuti con 4 consecuti errrori in attacco a quel punto Tom sostituisce Chris (UK) con Kees. Da quel punto la squadra reagisce e infila 5 punti consecuti riguadagnando la testa nel punteggio. Il sei si coclude sul 25-17 per Riga.

A quel punto la sfida era lanciata e lo spirito di Riga era di nuovo magicamente ritornato tra la squadra. Il tutto funzionava con una buona ricezione e qualche buona difesa portava Riga ben avanti nel punteggio. Staffs reagiva e riusciva a pattare il set verso la meta` a questo punto dopo un time out di Tom la squadra si porta decisamente aveti chiudendo il set 25-21.

Il quarto set si apriva con Riga che cercava di chiudere la partita partendo subito forte in battuta e attacco creando difficolta a Staffs che cambiava numerosi giocatori in cerca di un piu` giusto equilibrio.Riga a quel punto dimostrava una solidita` insospettata chiudendo il set e la partita 25-14.

A quel punto c`era da festeggiare una buona partita un ritrovato spirito di squadra.
Un merito particolare va dato a Tom per aver mantenuto la pazienza dopo che Luca, in un attimo di follia, aveva tirato un calcio alla sua cartella, e Phil per una eccellente prestazione e chiusura di match.

English Version

After a free weekend, Riga was again off to battle heading north east to participate in the derby against its cousins from Staffs.

As is customary, Riga expected a match full of intensity, since playing against Staffs usually proves to be tricky and they have been very decisive in winning their 3 sets quickly in the past.

The match of nerves began during the warm up, with over zealous hits and rather than a warm up, it seemed a little like ‘It’s a Knockout’!

With the second ref intervening a couple of times, the match ambiance returned to regularity.  Tom selected his team as follows: Phil: setter, Damon: opposite, John and Dan: middle players, Chris and Kiwi: hitters, and Luca as libero.

The first set began with Staffs taking the lead and Riga pulling the match back to equal standing. Staffs remained stronger in defence, whilst Riga were more precise in their first pass, yet weak on defence and hitting.  As is customary, Riga had 5 minutes of amnesia, allowing Staffs to take the opportunity and earn themselves a 5 point lead, which resulted in them being decisive in securing a Staffs win in the first set of 25-21.

The second set started with the same men on court, with clear instructions to the bench to warm up. The set began in much the same way as the first and Riga found difficulty in getting into the game. Again at mid point of the second set, Staffs were 5 points ahead, following four consecutive errors in attack, at which point Tom subbed Chris A with Kees. From that point, the team reacted and slipped 5 points on the score board, earning the lead. The set ended 25-17 for Riga.

At the third set, the gauntlet was down and the spirit of Riga returned amongst the team. All was in place to make it a win, with good passing and some good defending, taking Riga well ahead. Staffs tried to react and competed to mid point of the set, yet after a time out by Tom, the team moved decisively towards a win, ending the set at 25-21 for Riga.

The fourth set opened with Riga striving to end the match quickly, taking off with strong hits and a united attack and causing difficulty for Staffs who looked to substitute numerous players in order to find the right team balance. Riga, on the other hand, demonstrated a solid front, closing the set 25-14.

At that point celebrations began for a great match and more importantly, a rediscovered team spirit.  Top marks to Tom who remained particularly calm when Luca, in a moment of madness, decided to kick his folder into the air and well done to Phil H for his spirit and skill in closing the match and sealing the victory!  After a quick shower, the time had come to move to Phil H’s house where the team continued the celebration finishing at 05.00 am, a long night in good company.
