Match Report by Andy Collins
Riga Men’s 2nd travelled to Sheffield for their 3rd game of the season on Saturday. After a nightmare journey there Riga arrived late but have to thank the Sheffield team for delaying the warm up time.
After a good warm up Riga started strongly and were all level at 10 all mid way through the set. New signing Ivan Spisso was playing well along with Tom Young. The second half of the set though went the way of the Sheffield team with their quality and consistency showing through.
The second set was a bit of a disaster as the lack of understanding between the Riga team shone through and the set was lost to 10. The majority of the Sheffield team are training up to 10 hours a week we heard afterwards, and they boasted many England juniors and at least one player who has England Senior cap and it did show.
A shuffle of players in the 3rd set saw Riga playing a 2 setter system with the introduction of another new signing, Steve Price, to the fray and this gave the team a slightly better balance. Riga managed to compete for the majority of the set but then a run of serves at the end took the set and the game out of reach.
Although it was disappointing to lose the Riga team do now have a squad of players to work with and will be working hard in training to turn things round.|
