Seconds go out of Shield

EVA Shield, 31st January 2004
Warwick Riga II 0 Thames Valley 3 (15-25 15-25 19-25)

Riga’s men’s 2nd team lined up against the unknown quantity that was Thames Valley in the quarter final of the shield. Thames Valley were quick to take the initiative in the first set capitalising on Riga’s weak defence and missed hitting opportunities. Thames valley closed out the set 25-15. The second set followed in a similar vein and despite some strong fighting and improved covering was lost 25-15. The third set saw a change in rotation and an improvement in play from Riga. However, this was too little too late and Thames Valley closed out the match 25-19.

The result was a fair reflection of the match with Thames Valley taking it with relative ease (although it’s not that hard to beat a team playing like 6 cardboard cut-out’s!!). The only upside from the match was that ‘we can now concentrate on the league’ (the old clichés are always the best!).
