Match Report by Tracey Whitley
Warwick Riga Ladies sealed their fourth win in four matches on Sunday against Aschombe Volleyball 1, in the National League Division 1.
Riga won the toss and started the match, but soon found themselves trailing due to scrappy play from Aschcombe which made for difficult reading by the Riga defence. Aschcombe took the lead, until a time out by the coaching team, who inspired the girls to react faster to the unpredictable shots. After a substitution that saw Anna Meister serve 6 consecutive points Riga surged ahead, and with consistent setting from Lisa Purcell, allowed the teams rhythm to return. Riga finally took the first set 25-21.
Riga took confidence from their first set win and dominated the second set with strong hitting from Celine Heiderli and Alex Smith. Good defence from Julie Bromell with some alternative footwork, and strong serving again from Riga put pressure onto the young Aschombe team and Riga sealed the second set 25-16.
The final set saw Riga maintain their lead throughout. Julia Werdich powered her way through the Ashcombe defence and again Julie Bromell's fast reactions and consistent passing helped Riga to vary their attack. Strong blocking from the middle players dominated the net. After two further substitutions Riga sealed their victory at 25-18 and a strong position in the National League.
