Devon blown away by Riga gale

Prosport NVL Division Two, 20th March 2004
Warwick Riga 3 Devon 0 (25-8 25-19 25-18)

The first set score was a true reflection of the gulf between the two teams. A scratch Devon side, missing both their setters, struggled from the outset. Blown away in the first set by an impressive Riga attack, the opposition managed to re-group and come up with a respectable show of points in the next two sets. Riga took their foot off the gas and were perhaps a bit too relaxed for Tom Young's liking forcing a time out in the second set after a string of errors by the Riga defence. With ears ringing, the girls retaliated immediately and pulled away with ease thanks to some excellent line hitting from an in form Sally Keates.

Sally Keates: excellent line-hitting
Young made changes again in the 3rd set bringing Yaprak back on and Lisa Purcell in place of Liz. Play was still a bit jilted on Riga's part as they struggled to deal with Devon's unconventional style. The strength of Riga's attack prevailed and Yaprak's serving was the final nail in Devon's coffin, closing out the set and the match in style.
London Lynx now stand in the way of the Division 2 title. The girls travel down this Sunday confident that the championship is theirs. The London side are currently 8th in the table and shouldn't pose any threat to Riga but, rest assured, Young will be expecting a 'no prisoners' performance from his team and only a 3-0 win will do. Boy - will some beers be supped that night!!!!
Could it be a double celebration as well if the 2nd team lads come up trumps! Good luck to them!!
