Warwick Riga Leeds the way

Prosport NVL Division Two, 30th November 2003
Leeds 0 Warwick Riga 3 (19-25 17-25 16-25)

The anticipation was for a tough match against the ex 1st division side with reportedly several new foreign players. However Leeds were literally blown away by easily the best performance from Riga so far this season. The first six of Yaprak and Sally through the outside, Gulshan off setter, Dawn and young Laura through the middle with Lisa setting remained unchanged throughout. Assistant Coach Andy Collins was unwilling to change a winning team and decided to rest Marinella and Rachael.

Leeds could not cope with the barrage of hitting and serving dished up by the Riga girls. Yaprak was awesome, with Gulshan following close behind. Having a 'go to' player like Yaprak has allowed the rest of the players to hit freely with less pressure and hit freely they did! Laura netted serve after serve in the first two sets but redeemed herself big time when in the third she blasted 8 in a row and had the Leed's defence all over the place. There were a few scares however courtesy of Lisa when on two occasions she went down injured, first with a cricked neck and then with her ankle but thankfully was able to play on.

Collins : stuck with winning team
Libero, Jules, had an excellent weekend overall with some superb passing and defensive play.
The girls were thrilled with their performance against one of the stronger sides in the league and gives them great confidence for the coming games. The Leeds players were very complimentary saying that Riga was the best side they'd come up against this season.
The next match is Saturday 13th December 2pm at St Nix against Riga II.
