Due to scheduling conflicts earlier in the season, Riga had yet to meet Loughborough and instead play them consecutive weekends, hosting this week and travelling up to Loughborough next weekend.

As a result, Riga were not sure of the team who would appear on the other side of the net, a rare feeling this late in the season.  All the team did know was that Riga's 2005-2006 Player of the Year, Laura Hodgkinson would be one of Loughborough's strengths.  Loughborough has not had a fantastic season so far, but are always a well drilled, well organised team as Riga coach Tom Young reminded the girls before the match.  Riga returned to a nearly full squad (Fan Gueguen and Tracey Newton still out with injuries, but all other 10 fit and ready to go) and were looking forward to new signing Chloe Walkingshaw's debut.

The first set began with both teams battling for an early lead.  Excellent serving from Celine Haederli gained Riga a lead, but Loughborough retaliated in kind and put Riga's passing unit under strain to keep the scores level.  The two teams seemed fairly well matched, although Riga knew they weren't playing particularly well.  Coaches Young and Chris Anderson called a time out giving Riga a chance to settle down.   Michele Peryer made her mark with excellent serving, enabling Riga to pull away.  The teams traded side outs and Alex Smith served an ace to finish the set 25-21.

The second set saw a few changes to the Riga personelle.  Anna Meister came on through the right side and immediately made a strong impact back court and from the service line.  Chloe Walkingshaw came on and made her debut memorable by killing a ball in her first rally off a Loughborough student's face!  Walkingshaw settled in instantly and complemented Haederli well.  Riga took the second set comfortably 25-19.

As the coaches sent the team out for the third set there was one task, to improve the passing sufficiently to enable Lisa Purcell to start running the middle.  The team rose to this challenge and Julie Bromell lead the passing unit to achieve this.  Juliane Laetsch got kill after kill and Sophie Louen followed suit.  Meister served a string of points and Haederli and Walkingshaw put away balls through the outside.  Julia Werdich returned to the fray near the end and gave some excellent passes and pick ups and Smith returned to get a block.  Loughborough predictably fought hard in the last set, but eventually folded 25-22.
