Sponsors of Riga ladies' first team

On Saturday, The Coventry and Warwick Riga Women’s Team, sponsored by Mooncup, looked to build on their impressive victory last week against Malory, by taking on another London team - Polonia Ladies.

With Walkinshaw out with illness, and now a broken hand, it meant Riga had to play with Jules Bromell as a hitter and with no specialist back court player.

After a lively warm up the teams traded points until midway through the first set when Riga’s service pressure started to show. Anna Wojdala opened up a 4 point lead from the service line and this combined with great attacking by Celine Haederli through out the set made the difference. Riga never then gave up a point on the oppositions serve and took the set to 16.

Riga started the 2nd set in confident mood but didn’t produce the level of intensity of the first set.  At 3-6 down coach Andy Collins called a time out to refocus his team. The teams then traded points until another run of serves from Wojdala took Riga from 7-11 to 13-11 up. With this Riga never looked back. They kept the lead for the rest of the set with some great setting from Lisa Purcell and hitting from Jules Bromell. Riga closed out the set 25-21

The beginning of the 3rd set started well with Riga maintaining a lead throughout the first 2 thirds of the set with more good attacking from Michele Peryer thorough the middle and great disciplined block defence by the whole team. At 19 all though Polonia stunned Warwick by stringing together a run of strong serves and a big block on a Riga hitter. This shook the confidence slightly of the home side and they were unable to turn it around and lost the set 26-24.

A refocused Riga took to the court for the 4th set determined not to mess about. The service pressure was increased by all players and this, along with strong hitting from Riga MVP Michaela Maixnerova and continued great passing by the home serve receive unit, meant Warwick claimed the set and the match comfortably.

Coach Andy Collins was pleased with the performance and that the players can see that when we play with discipline and concentration that they are a match for anyone in this league.
