On Sunday, The Coventry and Warwick Riga Women’s Team, sponsored by Mooncup, travelled to joint bottom Reading wanting to go into the Christmas break with their 4th consecutive win

Still without Walkinshaw, and now Wojdala due to illness, it meant playing up Ellie Beattie and Miriam Kay from the second team.

After a relaxed warm up it was clear that Riga were going to dominate the game. Riga quickly opened up a 4 point lead with a good first pass and storming hits from MVP Celine Haederli. Beattie was fitting in well and contributed herself with good block touches and a couple of hits. Riga claimed the set 25-15

The task for the second set was not to drop their standard and keep the level of concentration up. This Riga did to a point trading points to 9-9 when a short run of served from Lisa Purcell broke the Reading teams will. Riga never looked back winning the set 25-17 on a Michaela Maixnerova spike.

The 3rd set started with Riga looking to enjoy themselves. Kay replaced Beattie and was immediately into the game. All players won runs of points on their serves and Julie Bromell was again effective through 2. A great hit from Kay followed by an ace serve from Michele Peryer finished the set 25-15 and the game 3-0.

Coach Andy Collins was pleased with the win but if being critical, would have preferred the players to have been more clinical.

Riga now have a break until the 10th January when they open up their cup account with a home fixture at Allan Higgs Sports Centre against Brentwood.
