3 - 0 (25:15 25:15 25:19)
Match Report by Michele Peryer
The first set starting six were Juliane Laetsch , Lisa Purcell, Celine Haederli, Michele Peryer, Alex Smith and Julia Werdich. The team were fired up and ready to take on Swiss Cottage, as they had already won two games in the season. Although the first few rotations were point for point Alex strung 5 points on her serve followed by 3 more on Julia’s serve, these gentle nudges were enough to keep momentum throughout the set and Riga managed to squeeze Swiss Cottage out of the game. Juliana played strong in her debut by hitting consistent middle balls with good passing control from Julie, Celine and Julia.
The second set was much the same as the first set, strong passing unit with consistent balls into the net allowing Lisa to use up to 3 hitting options regularly. Alex made the most of the opportunities through two. Michele held concentration for 6 points on her serve from being 3:2 to 9:2 up, which gave Tom & Chris (NZ) the ability to bring Anna on for Alex as opposite at 10:3. Some extreme back court hitting from Celine continued to drive Riga, and although Swiss Cottage used a sub at 13:20 Riga finished the set 25:15.
Swiss Cottage upped their tempo in the third set by swapping their setter, but still Riga controlled the pass in and allowed Julia to show her defiance in hitting the line. With 2 sets up, Riga coaches Tom & Chris used the time to start another new German player, Sophie on her debut for Riga through the middle, who gradually settled into the role. Anna again came on for Alex at 16:14 and produced good blocks and pick ups from the block, allowing Lisa to deliver good sets to both Celine and Juliana to close the match at 25:19.
Riga MVP awarded to Celine
