With a reduced team of 6 players Riga, sponsored by Mooncup, travelled their longest distance so far this season for their 12pm game in Poole. The team were still missing Walkingshaw and Wojdala due to injuries which meant that Julie Bromell had to swap her libero shirt and play opposite whilst Miriam Kay took on her middle position responsibility. Overcoming the surprise of using FIVB's new balls for the fist time, Riga had a good warm up and were ready to play. The game began with a tight start, and teams traded points up to 9-9 before Riga took the lead with some great power hits from Micheala Maixnerova and Celine Haederli. After some hard serving from Kay, the set was quickly won 25-14. The second set started off looking very much like the previous one, Coach Andy Collins opted for a time out at 7-7 to refocus the team after the easy first set win. The time out seemed to do the trick, as Bromell got a few awesome blocks followed by Michele Peryer's killer hits, which helped widen the gap to 22 – 16. Riga claimed the set 25-17 on a record time of 17 minutes. The last set started well, with a run of serves from Peryer allowing a 5-0 lead. However, Wessex caught up rapidly, taking the lead by a few points . The consistent and varied setting from team captain Lisa Purcell allowed some great hits, putting Riga back on track on a score of 20 -16. A great run of serves from Wessex no 6, put pressure on Riga's pass and destabilised their play. After an invigorating time-out at 21 – 23, Riga lifted their concentration level. Some great defence from Maixnerova, allowed the hitters to conclude the game 26 – 24. The 59 minutes game could have easily gone to a fourth set with Wessex serving with 3 set points. Their lack of success could be attributed to the very young and inexperienced team they presented on that day. Despite her “average” fitness level, Celine Haederli was voted most valuable player for Riga and Sarah Palmer for Wessex.
