Women lose 1, win 1 in Birmingham

NVL Division Three (C), 15th January 2006
Warwick Riga II 3 Loughborough Students III  1 (14-25 25-21 25-19 25-20)
Birmingham University 3 Warwick Riga II 0 (25-19 25-22 25-12 )

Warwick travelled to Birmingham this weekend for its first double header of 2006. With only five games left in the season, the team was keen to get a good start after the Christmas break.

The first game was against Loughborough Students. Warwick set off enthusiastic, but Christmas had clearly taken its toll and the first set went Loughborough's way, 25 -14. The team (assisted by coach John!) gave itself a stern talking to between sets and started the second set with renewed vigour. Some excellent hitting by Penny and Tonia saw Warwick close out the set 25 - 21. Warwick capitalised on this momentum with Jayne and Michelle's defensive play and a strong run of serving from Ginny helping to see the team take the next two sets and the game 3 - 1.

After the win against Loughborough Warwick set out determined, despite Birmingham's home advantage. The team started out shakily. For this game, John chose to play a libero format and good passing from Amanda helped the team to settle down and find its form. However, Birmingham snatched the set 25 - 19. Warwick started strongly in the second set and excellent blocking from Jeanine, Tonia and Michele kept Birmingham's strong middle player out of the game and enabled Warwick to match Birmingham point for point, until Birmingham just took the second set 25 - 22. Warwick were unable to keep up the standard of the second set and this saw the game go to Birmingham 3 - 1.
Warwick now sits joint fourth in the league. The next game is at home on 19 February, spectators (score or linespeople too!) welcome!
