Women's second team win a 5 set thriller against Camden and put up a good fight against the reigning champions Chelmsford

(21/01/2001)

Riga ladies second team got off to a cracking start in 2001 by picking up a win against Camden in London then playing their best volleyball of the season in going down 3 - 0 to top of the table Chelmsford.

The team flew into a 2 - 0 lead against Camden with Sally Facey leading the way by some very aggressive hitting. The team then did it's usual trick of conceding this lead as Camden drew level to 2- 2. Riga showed great determination in the 4th set and almost snatched victory. From 22 - 9 down, Stephanie Geoffroy served 10 points to bring the team back into contention - but the set just slipped away.

The fifth set saw Riga determined not to be beaten and we won 15 - 10.

This takes the ladies team to 4 wins from 7 matches which is an excellent record for this new team.

The second match was against Chelmsford - who regularly win div 3 central and always decline promotion. The Essex team have only dropped 4 sets this season and Riga played a really spirited match in going down 25 -10, 25 -12 and 25 -22. This match was easily the best Riga have played this season and our attacking play , particularly in the 3rd set was excellent. Despite the defeat, these 2 matches represented our best day so far in national league , with everyone contributing to an excellent outcome from our day in Camden. The team now have the chance to consolidate from this performance with a home match against Oxford on Sunday Jan 28th - 2.00 pm warm up at St Nicks.
