Women get a win in Cardiff

NVL Division Three (C), 11th December 2005
Warwick Riga II 3 Leicester 2 (19-25 21-25 25-16 25-20 22-20)
Cardiff Tigers 3 Warwick Riga II 1 (26-24 25-21 22-25 25-21)

Warwick Riga ladies II travelled to Cardiff last weekend for its last triangular fixture of the year. Warwick were to face Leicester and Cardiff Tigers VC. The team was down to six players due to various injuries and illnesses. Despite several players have to play out of their normal position the team remained confident. Old rivals Leicester game first and in the first two sets Warwick struggled to find form. However, in the third set some excellent hitting from Amanda and superb passing from Jayne saw Warwick start to turn it around. The team pulled together with Ginny and Clare distributing the ball well, the teams saw themselves in a decider set. The fifth set is first to 15 points, 2 points clear. It was a nail biting finish with the teams matching each other point for point until Warwick just managed to take the set and the game 22-20.

With no break between the games Warwick took to the court against Cardiff Tigers. In the first set the teams matched each other point for point. With Cardiff just taking the set from Warwick 26-24. Warwick fought back strongly with some good hitting from Penny and Michele and the team got a set under its belt. However, Cardiff proved too strong and closed out the game 3 sets to 1.

Coach, John, commented "The team and I went through a roller coaster of emotions at the weekend. To come back from two sets down against Leicester was a great performance. When you combine that with having four players out with injury, a couple playing out of position and another making her debut, then it was a fantastic result. With confidence still high we approached the match with Tigers expecting a win. Unfortunately the previous match with Leicester weakened our resolve and we failed to secure a win. On another day we would have had two wins and with the fighting spirit we showed throughout the weekend I am sure that will happen in the New Year."
