Women tame the Tigers but find Northampton too fierce

NVL Division Three (C), 30th October 2005
Warwick Riga II 3 Cardiff Tigers 2 (23–25, 16–25, 25–18, 25–17, 15–13.)
Warwick Riga II 3 Northampton 1 (20–25, 16–25, 18–25.)

Warwick were missing a few players for their triangular home fixture this weekend. Coach John decided to stick with the libero playing format and utilise all available players throughout the game.

Warwick got off to a strong start, narrowly missing out on the first set 25 – 23. Cardiff kept the momentum during the second to take it 25 – 17. However, Warwick soon put a stop to this run in the third set. Some strong line hitting from Jayne and confident blocking from Maja saw Warwick take the set 25 – 18. Inspired, Warwick dominated the fourth set. Cardiff could find no answer to Michele and Jayne's hits. The final set was a little closer but following a time out Warwick team spirit shone through as the girls pulled together to win the set and the match 15 – 13. Coach John said "I'm pleased with the team spirit shown by the girls today. It was this unity and dedication that saw them through to a significant victory".

Warwick were keen for another win following such a successful game against Cardiff. The team started out strong with good setting from Virginia and Clare. Rachel's blocking greatly assisted the team. However, Northampton took the first set 25 – 20. In the second set, although starting well with some excellent passing from Amanda, Northampton's hitting proved too strong and Warwick found themselves two sets down again! The third set was level pegging until Northampton found their form and after a run of points took the set and the match 25 – 18. Amanda's contribution as libero saw her awarded player of the match.

Thanks to scorer Tonia (get better soon!) and line judges Zano, Andy, Sam and Gary. Warwick's next game is Sunday 27 November away to Cardiff Ladies and University of Birmingham. After today's results, Warwick confidently sits fourth in the league and will be keen to continue the climb up the table in its next matches.
