No heaven in Devon for Riga seconds

Prosport NVL Division Two, 29th November 2003
Devon 3 Warwick Riga II 0 (26-24 25-19 25-23)

Riga ladies travelled down to Exeter this weekend for a match against old friends Devon. The team congregated at services just south of Bristol for a heated debate about positioning and tactics before continuing on to Devon confident about the task at hand. The team was determined to put in a good performance of volleyball this weekend and arrived at the Riverside Leisure Centre, via a few no entry signs, in high spirits. This fixture was also a good opportunity for reunions with several ex-Riga ladies now playing for Devon Ladies.

Riga ladies were looking strong in the warm up and the first set was a very closely fought contest. Riga's positioning is getting stronger and stronger and this showed as the team pushed on together. The team were playing strongly with Emma dominating the front court well and libero Sarah sweeping up any loose balls. The set was finally clinched by Devon 26-24. Spurred on by a strong performance the team went out confidently into the second set. However, a few errors crept into the play and the set slipped out of reach.
The team regrouped and was determined to make this their first five set game of the season. The team started off strongly with Penny showing strength and superb tactical play through the outside. This boosted the teams spirits and together we pushed on through the set. Emma's strong serving left Devon looking unsteady, but Devon managed to find their consistency again just in time to clinch the final set 25-23.

Penny Smith : superb tactical play
No rest for the team though, back up to Clifton, Bristol for a team night out before the game on Sunday against Malmesbury. After many discussions, thoughts, opinions and debates over the game the team headed out to Zio's Italian restaurant for fine food and wine and to do what women do best, have a good old natter! Then back to the B and B for some rest before tomorrow's game (and a drink from the kettle for Netty!! - surely the wooden spoon is going to this girl again??).
