Wearing their new Mooncup warm up t-shirts Riga Laides 2 travelled to London on the weekend to face Dulwich Knights and Tendring. In the 1st match, the girls got offf to a flying start winning the first set 25-14. Powered on by Ellie and Miriam through the middle the team took a good start to the second set. michele joined the fray at 7-6 and made a welcome return to the team with some powerful service. The team won the set 25-23. Riga started strong in the third set and despite some amazing pick ups by libero Amanda the girls began to falter. Even new signing Clare Walsh couldn't steady the team's nerves and the girls lost the third set 27-25. The girls came out all guns blazing in the fourth set determined to finish the game. Some great attacking and pick ups from Ellie and the team were well ahead. However, after two more unfortunate sets though it was just not meant to be and Dulwich Knights upped their game to take the match 3-2. After a quick break, Riga were determined to put the disappointment of the first match behind them. With a huge mental effort the team were soon 11-5 ahead due to some very consistent passing fom Netty (team captain), setting by Ginny and powerful middle hitting by Ellie. Riga powered on to take the set 25-15. Again, the girls came out strong with some inspired play by Jayne through her new position at opposite (with more hits than sets!). Good blocking by Miriam saw the team win the set 25-21. Clare rejoined the proceedings for the third set and the girls held their nerve and took the set and the match 25-18. MVP (Dulwich Knights game); Jayne Warman MVP (Tendring game); Clare Walsh |
