After disappointing losses in their last two matches, Riga emerged victorious away at Leeds 2. Awesome serving by Rennie put the Leeds serve receive under pressure for 12 points in a row. With a comfortable 12-1 lead, Riga played with confidence against an opposition which struggled to find fluency. Good distribution of the ball by Rennie enabled Purkis and Chetham to make strong attacks and with consistent back court play by Warman and Allen, Riga took the first set 25-10. Feeling a little complacent after a convincing win in the first set, Riga started slow in the second giving Leeds the lead for the majority of the set. Although Leeds’ ability to recycle the ball had improved, excellent hitting down the line by Warman and great blocking in the middle by Kay helped Riga fight back to take the set 27-25, ending on a high with an ace serve by Warman. The third set saw Schultz come on for Purkis to hit outside. The set was dominated by powerful serving from Leeds and poor passing by Riga gave Leeds a 9-2 lead that Riga couldn’t recover from. Despite good attacking from Schultz and Allen, passing errors lost Riga the set 11-25. In the fourth set, better passing gave Rennie the option to vary the play and attacks from Kay and Warman put Leeds’ defence under more pressure. With great defending by Riga and tough serving from Chetham and Purkis, Riga won the set comfortably, 25-15. |
