Women 2 in close call at Northampton

NVL Division Three (C), 25th September 2005
Warwick Riga II 0 Northampton 3 (23-25 26-28 18-25)

"Warwick Ladies II had an extremely close battle to mark their first game of the season. The team, looking somewhat different to last season due to a spate of pregnancies and one emigration, travelled to local rivals Northampton in good spirits looking forward to the first game of the new season.

Warwick had a shaky start. However, the team soon started to find its feet and an ace service from Penny combined with some strong line hitting from Jayne saw the team start to close the gap. Before long the scores were nearing equal and it was a close fought battle to the end of the set with Northampton just coming through and taking the set 25-23.

Warwick headed out strong in the second set. Excellent work and determination from Michele and Ginny put Warwick ahead. However, Northampton fought back strong with some excellent hitting and defensive play. The close of the set was another nail breaker and Northampton just managed to clinch it at 28-26.

In the final set Northampton kept up the momentum and set up a good lead. Despite some excellent hitting from Jeanine, Warwick were unable to close the set and Northampton took the match 3 sets to 0.

This game saw Warwick II national league debuts for Tonia and Rachel who have recently joined the squad and both players gave great performances so expect to see them as regulars on the court at future games.

Coach, John Boughton, commented that the team had suffered from lack of cohesive training prior to the start of the season. However, he and the team are confident that we can pull together over the next three weeks prior to our next game, for which we also have the home advantage."
