Women beat Oxford Students in thrilling five setter

(28/01/2001)

The Division 3 ladies now have more wins than losses under their belt, after an epic victory over 3rd placed Oxford Students. Oxford started off commanding the first set and taking an early, but not unreachable lead. Riga then worried them by coming back to draw level and forcing a time out at 14-14. The second half of the set was almost point for point with Oxford briefly taking the lead again, but Riga refused to give in and fought back to clinch the set 27-25.

The second set was again exceptionally close and Riga this time could not hold it to the end, losing narrowly 24-26. In the third set, Riga seemed to lose a little of their aggression and Oxford took an early lead. The fight back from Riga was too little too late and although coming back to within four points of Oxford, made some unforced errors which cost them the set 25-15.

The fourth set proved another point for point set, with little separating the two teams, but Riga kept the noise level up, increased their aggression once again and seemed to just have the edge over Oxford, winning 25-22. The determination from Riga carried through into the fifth set, and now Oxford were beginning to make mistakes. Riga were the first to the change around of 8 points, and kept up the pressure on Oxford, finally taking the set and the match 15-10 and 3-2. A good win, which reflected the recent good form of the team following on from last weekend's well played matches.
