Ladies 2nd team find it tough going in Salford

Prosport NVL Division 2, 14th September 2003
City of Salford 3 Warwick Riga II 0 (25-11 25-15 25-18)

Riga Ladies II faced a tough opening game in Division 2 last Sunday - we played Salford who finished in the top half of the division last season. The ladies team has several new faces plus a few departures - Jane Kinnis and Irene Scorza have moved onto the USA and Italy respectively and John Boughton has taken over the coaching duties from Rob. Nettie has joined us from the first team and brings a wealth of experience with her.
So, up to Manchester we headed and the story of the match unfolds...

We struggled in set 1, losing 25-11 and then steadily improved as the match progressed. The pace of the game was understandably much quicker than that of Division III East - but team confidence visibly increased in set 2. We gave Salford too much of a lead though and just found the gap too big to close down. Set 2 went to the Manchester team by 25-15.
Set 3 was much closer with Warwick holding the lead at 13-12 and the standard of volleyball was excellent. Riga couldn't quite match Salford's fire power in the final points and we lost the set 25-18.
So, plenty of things for the team to work on - but an encouraging start to life in Div 2 (and the ref was very complimentary about our play - who slipped him a fiver ??). We're looking to progress even further with our next game - home to Leeds on Sept 21st at St. Nicholas Park, 11.30 start.
