Report written by Amanda Dille

At first we were unsure whether we would have enough players for our first match of the season, due to holidays and work commitments. However with the aid of Julie we were able to take a healthy squad of 8 down to Haywards Heath to play Sussex dolphins and Brentwood ladies.

After a long 3 hour drive we were all a bit dazed which showed in the first set against Sussex Dolphins, with some excellent play by the dolphins a few mistakes by Riga we lost the first set 25-16. By the second set Riga had decided that they had come all this way to give up without a fight and with some encouraging talk from Ginny (who has taken on coaching for this season), Riga managed to pull back and win the second set 25-27. Riga continued to fight but unfortunately it wasn’t enough as the dolphins read the game well and kept finding holes behind the block that Riga struggled to cover.

The second match against Brentwood started off well with some strong passing from Julie and good hitting from Netty and Jayne, we won the set 25-16. In the second set Riga became slightly complacent but with good sets from Emma and some confident blocking by Ellie and Miriam through the middle we took the second set 25-17. Riga thought they had the game in the bag and were hoping to be in showers by 4 o’ clock however this was not the case. As we had fought in the first match Brentwood had to decided they were not going to give up without a fight. This caught Riga by surprise and Brentwood managed to take the third set 26-28. Riga realised that they had become too complacent and that they needed to step their game up to finish it off. The team pulled together and with some positive thinking managed to take the fourth and final set 25-20.
Yet again we continue our 50:50 ratio. Special Thanks to Ginny and Jayne for driving all that way.

Our next match is on 28th September (Away) against Ealing and Northampton.
