Ladies second team fail to spoil Lynx's promotion party

NL Division 3E, 9th December 2001
Warwick Riga 2 1 TH Lynx 3 (18-25 25-15 15-25 14-25)

Riga ladies second team faced a tough final home game against TH Lynx, with the Londoners looking for a win that would take them up to Division 2.  The first set was close with each team matching each other until the star server from lynx established a 7 point lead.  This burst took the opposition clear and Lynx won the first set  25 - 18.

Clare prepares to set
A more determined Riga attitude set in for the second set and Ruth Hosking was soon finding her range with a series of winning spikes.  The whole team was playing really well  and a very noisy bench was providing great encouragement - Nora served brilliantly to win Riga 5 points and take us to set point and Riga took the set comprehensively, 25 - 15. Great support was also received from the impressive crowd - thank you Jane !!!!!!!
Lynx were clearly rattled and they attacked right from the start of the 3rd set  and soon had a 10 point lead - however Tina then came to serve for Riga and a run a strong serves, coupled with better Riga attacking cut the deficit back to just 3 points.

Lynx's stronger hitting took over again and despite some great back court pick ups from Steph and Ruth G, Lynx took the set 25 - 15.

TH Lynx under pressure

One that got away
The 4th set saw Ginny make her debut as off setter as Clare continued as main setter for the team. A strange thing happened in this set - Riga's traditional star blockers decided to let others grab the glory.

A long rally saw 3 successive Riga blocks from Ana and Clare - even though the point was lost - it was good to see the blocks happening as the team have been working on this in training. Another training drill was translated into the match by Steph who produced a good winning spike from a poor pass from TH Lynx.

The set ended disappointedly for Riga as a series of unforced errors on the Riga attack saw Lynx win the set , 25 - 14 and take the match 3 -1 .

Our final games are on April 7th in Essex and  other results have recently gone against us  - leaving the team second from bottom - but still with 2 games to go we have the chance to improve on our league position.

We departed to a local pizza restaurant to say goodbye to Tina and Nora and to eat loads of pizza and fudge cake - and for Ruthie to do a very strong "I am p****d impression" on the walk back to the car park - despite only drinking water all night.  Obviously just a warm up for her forthcoming hen party...
