Wessex too strong for Ladies 2nd team

KO Cup Second Round, 17th November  2002
Warwick Riga II 0 Wessex 3 (18-25 11-25 20-25)

Riga Ladies 2 entertained high flying Division one side , Wessex , in the cup on Sunday at St. Nicholas Park.
The visitors found Riga in generous mood as the match started - we gave away a sackful of points with a run of serves that were out and more net touches in the first set than all our 5 league game put together. Despite this start, the Riga team managed to get to 18 points before Wessex took the set - makes you wonder what we would have achieved if we hadn't conceded so many free points.

Set 2 saw Riga play some excellent volleyball as we settled into the game and Wessex had to use all their big hitters to pull away into the lead.  However, Riga lost the set, 25-11 despite starting to find some Wessex gaps with some intelligent hitting and strong blocking.

Set 3 saw Riga take the lead 8-6 as we played our best volleyball of the day. Our team work was excellent, we kept the noise up and had some cracking attacks.

Driven on by the incentive of reaching 20 points, we held the division one side for most of the set. We lost the set 25-20 but the overall performance was impressive and it was good experience to pit ourselves against Division 1 opposition.

So a good day for the team and everyone can take a great deal of credit for this performance.

The team can now concentrate on the league and our next game is away to Brentwood on Dec 1st .  This will be the classic 6 pointer as Riga are currently top and Brentwood are second.
