Midsummer night heralds the summer season and the Riga Volleyball Club have seen an awful lot of summers in its history. Those summers have seen an awful lot of volleyball being played in an awful lot of tournaments. With that passage of time comes nostalgia. And memories – an awful lot of them. Of triumphs past – and future?. Of skin on leather and leathery skin. Of bleary eye on glass and fading eye behind glass. Of food emptied from plates and empty pates. |
| And so it comes to pass that in this year of 2004, a group of intrepid travellers from the Riga Volleyball Club will make the ultimate journey. No, not to create room for others to play on a Thursday night but to the Motherland. To Latvia and the spiritual home of the Club, Riga itself. Indeed this excursion has all the trademarks of an earlier expedition, when one Julius Caesar crossed an expanse of water to secure a long held ambition. His actions that day were summed up in three simple words, "veni, vidi, vici." So in but a short time, ten Riga souls will "veni", eighteen will "vidi" and hopefully there will be a few "vici" to toast. (So that’s ten veni, eighteen vidi and a few vici - sounds like the breakfast order on the first morning in the Old Town!) |
| As the excitement grows and the thirst builds for all those litres of cheap but strong Latvian beer, it is with inestimable pleasure that the Riga Volleyball Club website brings, you, dear avid readers – all two of you – The ORFILOT Saga! A trilogy in as many parts as can be found time to write and involving all manner of people, especially those that have not bribed the author, whoever he (or she) may be, sufficiently. Alternatively, write in to the website and bribe the author to include your favourite Riga star in the Saga – the higher the bribe the more outrageous and salacious the mention. |
| So did Paul @?#~ while Martin $%&? Was John’s suitcase really filled with *@$&*? Did Richie find Heathrow Airport in time to @*@@%? What does ORFILOT mean and do you care?! All this, and photos too, coming to a website near you – soon! |
