Annual Riga tournament - wet dry wet dry wet dry....

1 July 2007

Sunday 1 July saw the annual Riga tournament held at Musmjas in Wolston. 8 teams entered the tournament and everyone braved the great British summer weather to play some volleyball! The competition started with two pools of four teams playing a round robin against each other. After several rain delays, lunch stops, moving one entire court to drier ground and teams reluctance to brave the weather causing Chris much annoyance (!) the teams were then re-organised into a cup and plate competition for the afternoon.

The mornings pools saw some close games, with many finishing 15-14 in a set or even one set all! Riga ladies (and friends!) took a set from Riga old boys - much to Ben's delight (beating his father!) and Jayne's delight (beating her husband!).

The cup final saw Riga against AT7. The final was so tight that it went to a third set (first to 5) and Riga just took it 5 points to 4. The plate final saw Riga old boys meet Riga ladies (and friends!) again...Riga ladies took the first set. But Riga od boys fought back strong (those years of experience showing through!) and took the second. Riga ladies claimed a third set was due, but after quickly adding up the scores Riga old boys declared they were winners by 1 point overall.

The presentations took place just as it started raining again, with trophies for all teams.
