NVL Division 1, 25 November 2006
Warwick Riga v Manchester
3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-17)
Match Report by Martijn Stroo
Warwick Riga have completed a comfortable and convincing 3-0 victory over NVL1 relegation candidates Manchester. Manchester were hoping to serve up another upset like they did against London Malory on 28th October. A solid performance from Riga smashed all hopes, despite several absences in the Riga team. Both London Malory and City of Bristol 1 lost their games at the weekend, which makes this win even more important.
Coach Tom Young could not play Damon Minotti, and both Chris Andersons as Rugby, romances and moving house stood in the way.. Riga began the match against Manchester keen to get off to a good start. Manchester got the better of the early exchanges and the home team took a 5-1 lead. But Riga slowly started to get a foot hole in the set. Halfway through the set Riga took command and at 11-12 they never looked back to finish the 1st set 25-16. Riga started the second set in a hurry, taking a small lead 4-2. From that point Manchester took advantage of some unforced errors and poor defence of Riga, and were leading most of the latter part of the 2nd set. A good come back from Riga gave them the win 25-23.
Manchester did not give up, but another early lead in the 3rd set for Riga, however, gave the home team no chance. Time outs from the Manchester coach at 11-5 and 17-11 did not prevent that Riga took the 3rd set comfortably 25-17.
A strong performance by the Riga
attacking line-up. Special mention to Andreas’ high% attacking success. MVP
went to Phil Wyles for the 3rd time this season.
